We emigrated from Holland to Alice Springs in the centre of Australia
in the spring of 1971 and we love it here. Four of our six children,
Lilian, Ray, Eugene, Richard and Regine are living here, Simone lives
in Perth.
We semi-retired from business
in 1990 when Lilian took over the management of our picture-framing
and leadlighting shop. During 1993-94 Fred and I built a new house on
the outskirts of town. I look upon those two years as a ‘builder’s-labourer’,
as some of the best years of my life. In September 2001 our garden became
part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme and again in October 2002.
Since Fred retired in 1995 we are busier than ever.Fred
has a 'Fabulous Retirement Hobby'. He builds
and demonstrates the workings of (Dutch) street-organs. This gives us
both so much pleasure that the three organs he made so far are no longer
for sale. He is now working on his fourth organ, bigger and better still. We
welcome anyone who is interested in the organs, our garden or my writing
to visit us, here in Alice Springs. Just call us on (08) 89550064.
By showing what we have done we hope to inspire others.
Christmas 2002 was a very special occasion
as all of us, including our eleven grandchildren aged five to twenty-one
were together, for the first time since 1993, here
in Alice Springs.
